Málaga CF sign Juan Cruz: "Funes knows me and asks for what he did before"

Málaga CF have completed the signing of Juan Cruz, a Málaga-born striker returning to the club after an uneven season at Leganés. The 24-year-old player was presented on Wednesday at La Rosaleda alongside Fernando Calero and Carlos Dotor, two more signings for the team that will compete in Segunda División this season.

Juan Cruz explains why he joined Málaga CF: the role of Juanfran Funes

Juan Cruz did not hesitate to point to Juanfran Funes as the main reason for his return to the club that developed him. "The manager has had the biggest influence on me being here," the striker said in a press conference. "I know how he plays, it fits me perfectly and he asks of me practically what he asked when I was a kid: boldness, freedom on the pitch and enjoyment."

The manager, who hails from Loja, already coached Cruz at the club’s youth team before the player made the jump to the first team. "I imagine he’ll ask the same of me now," added the striker, who arrives eager to prove himself after a difficult campaign at Leganés.

Carlos Dotor, a 26-year-old midfielder, also arrived at La Rosaleda full of energy. "Last season was very special for all of us and I was clear I wanted to return," he explained. "I know the manager backed me last year, but this season the demands will be higher and I have to step up."

Fernando Calero, a 28-year-old defender and another club youth graduate, admitted he has played more on the right in recent seasons, though his versatility allows him to adapt to any defensive role. "It’s about training, listening to the manager and being ready for anything," said the Valladolid-born defender.

Juan Cruz seeks redemption after a tough season

The Málaga-born striker did not hide his motivation after a difficult year at Leganés. "I’m coming with a hunger for football, to prove who I am and to enjoy it again," he said. "The team infects me with their joy, their youth and the day-to-day jokes that make everything easier."

Cruz, who wore the club’s youth colors, highlighted the dressing room atmosphere as a key factor in his return. "When you’re surrounded by young, eager players, it makes you want to go out there and smash it," he stressed.
